Sciatic nerve is a large nerve running bilaterally downwards from the lower back (spine) to back of the leg. When this nerve is compressed due to any kind of anatomical disturbances it leads to pain, this condition is termed as Sciatica.
Basically sciatica affects only one side most of the times, but it may be bilateral in rare cases. In sciatica pain usually radiates from lower back towards the back of the thigh up to the toes. The pain is caused due to irritation to the sciatic nerve at the lumbosacral region, where the nerve bifurcates from spinal column towards each leg. This is the origin of the nerve. Exactly at this point the nerve is compressed leading to pain, which is shooting in nature.
Sciatica is a condition involving anatomical deviation in and around spine which leads to irritation of sciatic nerve. This is caused because of the following reasons
- Narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back (Lumbar spinal stenosis )
- Degenerative disc disease
- Spondylolisthesis (slipped vertebra)
- Pregnancy (due to convexity of spine)
- Muscle spasm in the back or buttocks
Early signs may vary from pain in lower back, weakness and/or numbness of lower extremity, loss of bladder control. Complete presentation of the disease displays the following picture.
- Lower back pain
- Pain radiating downwards in single or (rarely) both legs.
- Hip pain
- Burning or tingling down the leg
- Weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg or foot
- A constant pain in the back side of the leg
- A shooting pain that makes it difficult to stand up
